Canon EOS 40D Review at Popular Photography

Popular Photography has tested the Canon EOS 40D a 10.1 megapixel (CMOS sensor) DSLR with 6.5 frames per second shooting, a new Autofocus system with 9 cross type sensors, 3.0 inch LCD with Live View, DIGIC III image processor, EOS integrated cleaning system, Spot Metering, and a larger, brighter view finder and quieter mechanism than it’s predecessor.

They write – ‘The 40D’s new live preview mode is a hot feature, giving you through-the-lens viewing on the 3-inch LCD, with a full data display under the image. Unlike the 1D Mark III, the 40D’s AF works in live preview. It’s similar to the live preview AF on several Olympus and Panasonic DSLRs, and causes a short screen blackout while the mirror flips down and the camera focuses. Not the ideal AF method, but useful in some situations.”

Canon Digital Rebel XSi Review at Pocket Lint

Pocket Lint has reviewed the Canon Digital Rebel XSi / EOS 450D which features a 12.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC III Image Processor, 3.5 fps continous shooting, 9-point AF system, 3.0 inch LCD with Live View, and optical image stabilization.

They write: “If you’ve yet to enter the digital SLR market and fancy going Canon, there are a number of features here on the Canon 450D that will appeal, not only that, it’s actually a very good camera that performs well if not a little flat for our liking, something that can be fixed easily in Photoshop… If your new to the digital SLR world and want Canon go for it. If you’re looking to upgrade and 400D users don’t worry you don’t have to yet, go for the more powerful 40D it offers much more for your money and should last you a lot longer.”

Canon EOS 40D Review at DCRP

DCRP reviews the Canon EOS 40D a 10.1 megapixel (CMOS sensor) DSLR with 6.5 frames per second shooting, a new Autofocus system with 9 cross type sensors, 3.0 inch LCD with Live View, DIGIC III image processor, EOS integrated cleaning system, Spot Metering, and a larger, brighter view finder and quieter mechanism than it’s predecessor.

They write – ‘The EOS-40D is capable of producing excellent quality photos, especially with a high quality lens attached (read: not my 17-85 IS lens). The camera produces very smooth-looking (yet still sharp) photos, with pleasing color, and minimal purple fringing (this last one is really more of a lens issue, though). Noise isn’t really noticeable until you get near ISO 1600, and even then, it’s more than manageable. Even the ISO 3200 is usable, especially if you do some cleanup work in software. The camera does tend to underexpose a bit, most notably when the sun’s not out, so keep that in mind. Much to my surprise, the 40D has a slight redeye problem, probably due to its weak redeye reduction lamp.”

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi Review at PhotoReview

PhotoReview.au has reviewed the Canon Digital Rebel XSi / EOS 450D which features a 12.2 megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC III Image Processor, 3.5 fps continous shooting, 9-point AF system, 3.0 inch LCD with Live View, and optical image stabilization.

They write: "Low-light performance was outstanding, with no apparent noise right up to ISO 800 and very little noise thereafter. Shots taken at ISO 1600 were sharp and colour-accurate with only a hint of visible colour noise. This was eliminated with the high ISO noise reduction setting. Long exposure noise reduction produced little in the way of image softening but wasn’t really necessary in most situations.”

Canon EOS 40D Review at ShutterBug

ShutterBug reviews the Canon EOS 40D a 10.1 megapixel (CMOS sensor) DSLR with 6.5 frames per second shooting, a new Autofocus system with 9 cross type sensors, 3.0 inch LCD with Live View, DIGIC III image processor, EOS integrated cleaning system, Spot Metering, and a larger, brighter view finder and quieter mechanism than it’s predecessor.

They write: "the quality of the results using built-in flash, especially in Program for fill, are the best I have seen. It has dust delete, sensor cleaning, wireless capability, and even interchangeable focusing screens. And image results with 14-bit raw are sure to satisfy the most demanding advanced amateur photographer… For those seeking a responsive, quality D-SLR in the mid-price range it is more than worthy of consideration.”
